Arthur Hiller (Love Story) directed the film adaptation of Neil Simon’s curious comedy about a pair of non-New Yorkers (Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis) having a hellish visit to the Big Apple on the eve of a job interview for Lemmon’s character. Made in 1970, this hectic film almost seems ahead of its time when compared to more recent misery-piled-on-misery comedies such as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The couple in this film endure everything that can go wrong on a trip, including being forced to spend the night in a mugger-happy Central Park. The strange element in Simon’s script, though, is that Lemmon’s character is so unpleasant. A middle-class, uptight guy who can’t believe that New Yorkers in the service profession don’t perform their jobs slavishly, he’s kind of a one-note joke that quickly wears thin. Recycling parts of his maniacal roles in Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, and Cape Fear, De Niro takes his idolatry to violent extremes, eliminating any obstacle to Snipes’s stardom until the baseball hero is forced to confront his most terrifying devotee. Directed with brutal excess and souped-up style by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), this manipulative nail-biter pulls all the right strings in predictable fashion, but it does have moments that are effectively intense. –Jeff Shannon

The past comes back to haunt each of the characters in the sixth installment of the popular noir sci-fi adventure. In “Brain Scratch,” Faye is drawn into an eerie cult that promises electronic immortality and an end to worldly cares. Director Shinichiro Watanabe juxtaposes flashy television graphics with gritty, gray reality, as Ed hacks a path to the truth. Next, Faye and Ed confront different yet linked pasts in “Hard Luck Woman.” Ed (who turns out to be a girl) finds her long-lost father; Faye learns she can’t go back to the world she knew before a devastating accident. The two-part epsiode “Real Folk Blus” returns to the saga of Julia, the woman Spike once loved, who appeared in “Jupiter Jazz” (episodes 12 and 13). The icy Vicious’s attempt to take over the Red Dragon mob draws Spike and Julia into a deadly web of revenge.
“Real Folk Blus” marks the end of Cowboy Bebop, arguably the most stylish and sophisticated anime series in recent years. This last adventure will leave viewers with the same sense of loss they experienced when the first Star Wars trilogy ended. Although no further television episodes are planned, a feature is in the works. Fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Space Cowboy in the not-too-distant future.

This extraordinary World War I film concerns themes of heroism, sacrifice, duty, and self-knowledge as profound as any in Saving Private Ryan. The story, taken from Pat Barker’s 1991 novel Regeneration and based on tru events, is set in a British Army hospital in Craiglockart, Scotland, in 1917. There, a pioneering psychiatrist named Dr. William Rivers (Jonathan Pryce) works with shell-shocked soldiers in a gentle, humane manner that contrasts sharply with the brutality of his colleagus. (The film’s most horrifying scene features a mute patient being forced to speak by means of electric shock.)
Among Rivers’s patients is a mute, amnesiac officer named Billy Prior (Jonny Lee Miller), as well as the emotionally depleted poet Wilfred Owen (Stuart Bunce) and another poet and war hero, Siegfried Sassoon (James Wilby). Unlike the others, Sassoon is not, in fact, suffering from any disorder but is being quietly punished for writing a pamphlet denouncing the war. The army hopes Rivers can find some basis for mental incompetency in Sassoon, but the thoughtful doctor instead attempts to persuade him to add legitimacy to his criticisms of the war by returning to active duty.
Pryce brilliantly captures the cumulative effects of Rivers’s responsibility–of fixing men and sending them back to their possible deaths–on the good doctor’s nerves. Wilby is also fine as Sassoon, but the film belongs just as much to actors Miller and Bunce, whose characters are different kinds of men struggling to find their balance, one through a revived sense of duty and the other through his writing. Scottish filmmaker Gillies Mackinnon (The Playboys) is at the top of his form, telling a uniqu story about the invisible wounds of war while shedding light on the meeting of two visionary poets and one visionary physician. –Tom Keogh
